Indian Wedding Guest Attire

First time attending an Indian wedding?
Here is some information to help guide you!

The universe of Indian wedding attire is intricate and includes many distinct styles that reflect the diverse cultures of India. Please see our Event Schedule for the recommended dress code for each event. To keep things simple, we’ve identified the most common outfit types below. Don’t hesitate to ask us any questions as you plan your outfits or need help choosing a style that makes you feel comfortable.

For Men

  • Kurta Pajama Set (Casual or Semi-Formal): A loose-fitting tunic top that is paired with matching trousers. Men may decide to wear short or long vest on top of their kurta to dress it up.

  • Bandhgala (Formal): An ensemble that is similar to a typical Western suit

  • Sherwani (Formal): A piece of ceremonial attire for men. It is a long button-down coat with some form of embroidery or embellishment.

For Women

  • Salwar Kameez (Semi-Formal): A 3-piece ensemble that consists of a tunic (short or long), trousers and a dupatta. It's more dramatic cousin is known as the Sharara (Formal), which features wide-legged pants that create an illusion of a skirt while walking! An Anarkali (Formal) is a long, frock-style salwar kameez with a slim-fitted bottom called ‘churidar' pants.

  • Lehenga/Ghagra (Formal): A 3-piece ensemble that consists of a crop top style blouse, a skirt, and a dupatta (shawl).

  • Saree (Formal): A garment that is made from a single unstitched piece of fabric, which drapes around the entire body. A saree can be challenging to pin up/drape without prior experience, so we recommend opting for a pre-stitched saree that is already pleated.

A brief word on shoes: Please wear comfortable sandals, loafers, or dress shoes that you can dance in… you can also ditch the shoes for the dance floor :). There will be no events on grass, so any heel type will do!
